How to use this Blueprint

Every breath-hold follows the same 5 stages.

Most people panic during a breath-hold because they don't know what is happening in their body. The urge to breathe feels like an emergency. The contractions feel like danger. They are not.

When you understand each stage before it happens, everything changes. You stop reacting and start observing. That is the shift that makes you better.

Use this Blueprint as your reference. Read it before you train. Come back to it after. Over time the stages become familiar, and familiar feels calm.

📖

Read the stages first

Understand what to expect at each phase before you hold your breath.

🎥

Do the hold

Follow along with the guided video below and do your own breath-hold.

🔁

Come back to it

After each session, revisit the stage that challenged you most.

What happens at each stage

Your complete reference for every phase of the breath-hold.

00
Stage 00
Preparation Routine

Light stretching: 5 minutes

Square breathing 4:4:4:4, or any other relaxing breathwork: 5 minutes. Just make sure you breathe calmly. Avoid any breathwork based on deep and rapid breaths.

Set your intention. Relaxation first. No pressure. Just softness and presence.

Note: in the guided video below, we skipped Stage 00 and went straight to the breathe-up.

01
Stage 01
Breathe-Up

Tidal breathing (normal, light breathing): 2 minutes

Mind slows down. Heart rate drops.

Release tension in chest, neck, shoulders.

Be in your own world. Shut everything else out.

Take a final breath. Fill the lungs completely. One big breath in.

02
Stage 02
Relaxation Phase

No urge to breathe yet. This is the most enjoyable part of the hold.

Visualization or body scan. These are mind mastering techniques. Relax deeper with every second.

Total stillness. Minimal oxygen use. Maximum calm.

03
Stage 03
Contraction Phase

The first urge to breathe, or the first contraction. Often subtle at first.

If you cannot identify the exact first contraction yet, that is fine. Go with the first definite urge to breathe. Awareness develops over time.

Contractions build slowly: weak, clearer, more frequent.

Awareness replaces panic. You observe instead of react.

Relax into contractions. Soften the face, shoulders, chest.

Eventually the contractions come on stronger and more frequently. That is when most people decide it is enough and stop the hold.

04
Stage 04
Recovery Breathing

Stop when contractions feel too strong.

Always take 4 big active recovery breaths, even if you don't feel like you need them.

Build this habit now. When holds get longer, those 4 breaths will matter. Make it muscle memory.

Body resets to calm. Breath-hold cycle complete.

Follow along and do your own hold

2 minutes breathe-up. 2 minute hold. Press play, follow the guidance, and hold your breath along with the video. See how each stage feels in your own body. Note: Stage 00 is skipped in this video. Go straight into the breathe-up.

⚠️ Safety Rules: Non-Negotiable

Read these before every session. No exceptions.

🛌️

Dry training? Always lie down or sit. Never stand. You could faint and hit your head. No nose clip, no mask. Nothing on your face.

🤝

In water? Always have a trained buddy. A lifeguard does not count. It needs to be a trained freediver.

🧒

Keep it manageable. Calm and comfort over extremes. High intensity creates a negative mental feedback loop that makes the practice unsustainable.

📈

Never over-breathe. Calm, diaphragmatic breaths only. Hyperventilating is dangerous and defeats the purpose.

🔁

Rest between sessions. Breath-hold training stresses the nervous system. Consistency beats volume every time.

🛑

Stop immediately if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. These are warning signs. Always err on the side of caution.

build the foundation.

Calm and control start with breathing correctly. Not with holding your breath.
